Big things happening to the PAG application blocks

Forthose of you who use the Application Blocks, the MS Patterns and Practices teamannounced something today that should have you salivating: Enterprise Librarywill be coming in early 2005. From the announcementon the PAG site:

EnterpriseLibrary 1.0 will bring together new releases of the most widely reusable blocksinto a single integrated download.

The major themes of Enterprise Library are:

Consistency – all Enterprise Library ApplicationBlocks will feature consistent design patterns and implementation approaches, configuration mechanisms and tools, documentation, samples, deployment andoperational processes.

Extensibility – all blocks include definedextensibility points which allow developers to customize the behavior of theblocks by ‘plugging in’ their own code. Enterprise Library willalso ship with guidance to assist developers with building their own blocksthat integrate with the Library.

Ease of Use – Enterprise Library will offernumerous usability improvements, including a graphical configuration tool, simpler installation, and clearer and more complete documentation andsamples.

Integration – the Enterprise Library ApplicationBlocks are designed and tested to work well together. It will also bepossible to use the blocks individually, thus catering for a range ofdifferent usage scenarios.

The initial release of Enterprise Library will include Application Blocks thatsupport the following scenarios: data access, exception handling, caching, configuration, logging, security and cryptography. In the future the librarywill be expanded to include additional Application Blocks that support a widerrange of scenarios.

I’mpretty excited about this. I’ve been tangentially involved in thisproject for a while now, and I think the final product will really drive a lotof value to enterprise customers on the .NET platform. Plus, it’s alwaysnice to see my company get some props:

Thefirst version of Enterprise Library is being developed by Microsoft in partnershipwith Avanade. In recognition of Avanade’s role in helping build thefoundation of this deliverable, this version will be available toAvanade’s enterprise customers in late 2004 prior to the general release. It will then be released to the general public in early 2005

Notmuch else that can be said in this forum at this time. However, you can get asneak peak over on the GotDotNet workspaceright now.
